Infectious Disease Program

Infections are often unexpected and stressful events that can lead to extended hospital stays. The The Specialty Hospital at Rittenhouse provides comprehensive medical and nursing services to care for patients with infectious diseases requiring IV antibiotics. Our program provides the highest quality care, led by specialized medical staff and board-certified infectious disease physicians.

My husband had a hernia that became infected — after multiple surgeries, he came to the Specialty Hospital at Rittenhouse to grow stronger. We knew the doctors and wound care nurses here were in constant contact with the Penn Network, which really reassured us.”

What to Expect

Our physician-led infectious disease team is backed by the Penn Medicine network, and includes a board-certified infectious disease physician and a certified infection control nurse. These clinicians work closely with pharmacists, hospitalists and other team members to prevent, monitor and treat infections, through a variety of methods:

  • Managing antibiotic use to prevent development of drug-resistant organisms
  • Diagnosing early infections
  • Comprehensive clinical wound management and therapy
  • IV therapy (TPN and antibiotics)
  • Nutritional counseling
  • Surveillance of all patients for drug-resistant organisms
  • Updating clinical staff on infection prevention measures

Program clinicians have expertise in treating infections with organisms such as methicillin-resistant staphylococcus aureus (MRSA), multi-drug resistant gram-negative bacteria and recurrent infections with C. difficile.
