Penn Medicine’s Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation Residence Program

Penn’s Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation residency offers a fully ACGME-accredited 4-year categorical program as well as a 3-year advanced program. Residents rotate through inpatient, outpatient and consultative services with progressive levels of responsibility throughout their training. Residency training takes place at a variety of locations offering inpatient and outpatient services.

They offer both categorical and advanced tracks within our residency programs:

  • Categorical – Candidates enter the program as an intern (PGY-1) and reach completion of the program after 4 years.
  • Advanced – Candidates enter the program after successful completion of an internship. Residents apply to the program to begin as a Post-Graduate Year 2 (PGY-2) resident.

Acute Care Internship

The acute care internship at the Hospital of the University of Pennsylvania is a unique partnership with several local physical therapy programs.  The internship provides competency-based learning and clinical training for physical therapy students beginning in the last clinical affiliation and continuing post-graduation into the employment phase. 

Outpatient Therapy Post-Professional Residency Programs

Residency programs provide post professional education through one-to-one mentoring, structured curricular experiences, and guided learning designed to increase the quality of patient care and practitioner knowledge in specialty areas through best practices. 

Penn Therapy & Fitness offers Orthopedic and Women’s Health residencies and both have been accredited by the American Board of Physical Therapy Residency and Fellowship (ABPTRFE) since 2013.   Residents are hired as full time employees and receive clinical training and mentorship from a variety of faculty and mentors with diverse backgrounds and experience in orthopedics and women’s health.  Penn Therapy & Fitness utilizes an online portal to for those interested in applying to our residency programs.
