Orthopedic Residency Program

Penn Medicine | Good Shepherd Rehabiltation Outpatient Therapy offers physical therapy Residency in orthopedics. The 50-week residency begin in September and is based out of University City in Philadelphia, PA. Residents receive 35 hours of work training, plus 10 hours of mentorship per week. Residency candidates will have the opportunity for mentorship from a variety of therapists with diverse backgrounds and experience in orthopedics.

Residency Structure

• 50 week program (to be completed by maximum of 56 weeks)
• 35 hours / week of patient care and 10 hours / week of 1:1 mentorship and didactic education in Orthopedics including modules on the Spine, Lower Extremities, and Upper Extremities
• Exposure to Special Interest Groups – Spine, TMJ, Orthopedics, Sports
• Exposure to clinical observation of different specialty areas such as Spine Center, Pain Center, Sports Medicine Center, Orthopedic surgeries
• Opportunity for mentorship from a variety of therapists with diverse backgrounds and experience in Orthopedics
• During the Residency Program, the Residents are employees of GSPP Rehabilitation and offered all the same benefits as employees

• Clinical experience in the specialty area
• Research experience
• Community service
• Advocacy of the profession

Residents selected to this program must:

• Have a valid and permanent Pennsylvania Physical Therapy License in good standing.
• Complete a GSPP Rehabilitation application for employment.

Desirable candidates will have evidence of the following:

• Experience in outpatient physical therapy in the specialty area
• Superior verbal and written communication skills Strong fundamentals in the principles of clinical reasoning and the application of manual examination and treatment procedures
• Basic knowledge of the description of specialty practice and genuine desire to advance skills in the specialty area

• The Orthopedic Residency was established in 2012
• American Board of Physical Therapy Residency and Fellowship (ABPTRFE) accredited in 2013
• Re-accredited by ABPTRFE for 2018-2028
• 94% graduation rate
• 92% first time pass rate on the APTA Orthopedic Specialist Certification Exam; 100% overall pass rate
